  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp. distilled white vinegar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 5 Tbsp. vegan chocolate chips


Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2

Spray a 9-inch cake pan or 9-inch pie plate with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

Step 3

In a medium bowl, add all of the ingredients except the chocolate chips. Stir or whisk until smooth.

Step 4

Pour the mixture into the cake pan or pie plate.Sprinkle chocolate chips on top. Using a fork, poke the chocolate chips down into the middle of the batter.

Step 5

Bake at 350 degrees F for 25 minutes. (Clearly I didn’t do a good enough job of poking the chips down. I thought they’d sink while the cake baked.)

Step 6
