Finally, the bees seal the cell with wax produced by their abdominal gland, making the honey protected and ready for consumption.

Process of forced production of the honey

As we have mentioned, to naturally produce one spoonful of honey, 4ml, it takes the lifetime work of about 10 or 12 bees. The problem is that this is not profitable for the beekeeper, so different methods are often used to produce all the honey you can buy in the supermarket.

The first thing that is usually done is to cut off the wings of the queen bee and artificially inseminate her, so that more eggs are produced and, in the long run, more bees will produce the honey.

After a few years, the queen bee is killed and replaced, since its production capacity is lower. In any case, the time when bees usually eat more honey is in autumn, as they begin to prepare for winter.

Reasons why vegans do not eat honey

There are many reasons why vegans don’t eat traditional honey; here are some of the main reasons:

  • Beekeeping: these insects suffer during transportation; furthermore, since the purchase and sale of bees is done internationally, in some cases they can drown due to overheating or freezing.
  • Death by crushing: the handling of the honey panels by beekeepers can lead to many bees dying by crushing, since they do not know how to react when the hives are sprayed with smoke, which is done by the beekeepers to calm them down and prevent them from stinging. They kill the queen and leave the hive orphaned for 48 hours, which increases the stress on the others.
  • Use of pesticides and antibiotics: these are used to combat pests, although they put the health of beekeepers and bees, as well as the environment, at risk. Today, many professionals are betting on the use of antibiotics, although they are still harmful to insects.
  • Death by starvation: honey is the food of bees and beekeepers feed them with artificial products of pollen and white sugar syrup, with a high fructose content; the problem is that this causes their malnutrition and can mean that they die of starvation.
  • Stolen honey: they produce the honey for feeding; moreover, by performing this task for long periods of time, the productivity and longevity of the hive decrease.
  • Adulterated honey: the high demand for honey means that many beekeepers have mixed honey with syrups, such as rice syrup, to increase the amount of these sweeteners and reduce costs.

Bees have an extensive nervous system, through which pain signals are transmitted.
